5 Inversions To Try Right Now!

Inversions often appear to be visually dramatic poses and there not accessible to everyone. Instagram and other photo-sharing networks have only magnified the need to show our abilities. However, an inversion is really just any asana (pose) where the head is below the heart. Can you think of any asanas that qualify?

  • Adho Mukho Svanasana ( Downward Facing Dog)
  • Uttanasana (Forward-Fold)
  • Prasarita Padottanasana  (Wide-Legged Forward Bend )
  • Makarasana (Dolphin Pose)
  • Viparita Karani (Legs up at the wall)

It’s no surprise that inversions are incredibly beneficial to the body and mind – they encourage blood flow to the brain, help drain lymph fluid from your lower body, and promote relaxation, just to name a few.

Sirsasana at Align Yoga

I have been practicing yoga for nearly 13 years, and am still working on practicing a headstand or handstand without wall support. Surprised? That’s okay, lots of people are. It took a while to let go of the need to achieve a certain “state” in my yoga practice. Actually, it took a grueling and life changing 200-hour training to show me that yoga is truly an individual journey =).

The benefits of inversion can be experienced in many different asanas, so don’t ever feel discouraged if you don’t get upside down on your first try, or your hundredth try. Practicing asanas like Dolphin pose and Downward Facing Dog will help to build the strength and confidence to allow your body for the next step.
